DATA THEFT GETS TOUGH

City-based company develops a software that alerts you about data theft using USB removable devices. It also helps you to save power by notifying when PC is not shut down

PUNE: Here’s a true-blue home-grown software product that’s turning out to be quite popular. City-based CygNet System Pvt Ltd has developed a software application, USB Copy-Notify! that makes it easy to detect and hence prevent data theft that can happen due to the use of an unauthorised USB drive. While the Pune Mirror could not confirm this 100 per cent, this is arguably the only USB product specific end point security solution that bears the ‘Made in India’ tag.
While it does prevent data theft, the application also has a strong ‘green’ factor to it. The device also acts as a power saving device. More on that later.
The development in USB technology has meant that whole gigabytes of data can be stored on removable USB devices like pen drives and memory sticks. USB drives have come like a blessing directly from technology heaven. No longer the need to write CDs, no longer does one need to tackle the problem of carrying large amounts of data from one terminal to another. Just plug and play. It’s become that easy, as everyone has experienced. The problem however is that, it has made data theft proportionately easier. Anyone could enter an office space, plug in an USB and walk away with precious intellectual property and no one would know better.
That’s where USB CopyNotify! comes into effect. Says Zarir Karbhari, CEO, CygNet Systems Pvt Ltd, “USB CopyNotify! has been designed and developed to reduce this very form of data theft via USB removable devices. It notifies you when a USB removable device is being used on any of the PCs on the office network.
As soon as a USB device is inserted into any of the PCs, this security utility alerts you automatically of the action hence reducing the possibility of the unauthorised copying of confidential data onto removable USB devices.”
HOW IT WORKS?
“USB Copynotify! has to be installed on all computers। Once configured and setup, the software continously monitors each machine it has been loaded for any USB device activity such as INSERT, REMOVE, COPY etc. As soon as any activity detected, immediate notification is sent to the supervisor about which machine has had this actitivy detected, who is using this machine and a quick description of the same. These notifications can be sent via email also. USB CopyNotify! sends a SAVE Energy alert if any computer in the office has been left ON and is inactive for a specified period of time.
